stuttering speech therapy

While stuttering speech therapy might seem intimidating, the techniques used are not frightening at all.

To help you understand better, here is an outline of the most common therapy activities that your child will go through.

  1. The Jaw Technique

One of the most physical stuttering speech therapy exercises is focused on jaw movement. A therapist will ask your child to open their mouth as wide as possible without causing pain.  They will then rub their tongue on the top of their mouth to the back and hold. Later they will move their tongue all the way out and hold. The therapist will ensure that your child won’t put themselves through pain as that is counterintuitive to their therapy.

  1. A E I O U Therapy

Saying the vowels as loudly and pronounced as possible is another common exercise. This will help your child with their stammering and make it easier to get your child to become more accustomed to their therapy.

  1. Breathing Changes

Being taught to breathe using their stomach is another therapy solution.  Most stuttering is the cause of tension in the muscles. Changing where and how your child breathes will put the body at ease and make speaking easier.

  1. Pauses

Pausing is just as important to the actual speaking in therapy. Your child’s therapist will give your child a sentence to say out loud. However, they will learn to pause after certain words in a sentence. By learning to pause after a word instead of in the middle of a word, your child’s stuttering will decrease with this exercise.

5. Switching To Straws

By making your child drink through a straw you are actually teaching them about tongue placement. This is important in relaxing your child and using a straw is very beneficial to your child’s speech.
