ronda rousey speech impediment

Due to her experience growing up with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), Ronda Rousey knows the challenge of overcoming tough obstacles.  Rousey has made it one of her goals to encourage people to push through their challenges and accomplish their goals.  LA Speech Therapy solutions, a Whittier speech therapy service, shares the story below:

During a recent Q&A with Reddit, the MMA fighter discussed everything from her conflict with Floyd Mayweather to her favorite fictional TV characters.  One fan asked her about her challenges with speech growing up and she shared how a speech therapist helped her overcome CAS.  CAS is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard for sufferers to say certain syllables, sounds and words.

Rousey said, “I love my speech therapist — I thought she was super cool and I didn’t even know I was in speech therapy.”  Through her journey and with the help of her platform, she has become a huge advocate for kids who have trouble with speech, just like she once did.

“I’d like to tell any kid struggling with speech that anything can be overcome with hard work, regardless of how insurmountable the odds seem.  Shout-out to all speech therapists. You’re all awesome, and the best thing about my recovery was that I was never allowed to feel inferior.”

Growing up with older sisters and being the daughter to an aerospace engineer and a psychologist definitely contributed to a feeling of inferiority for the now champion MMA fighter.  It was through speech therapy that Ronda was able to gain a voice and her self-confidence soon followed.
